Cannabis Consumption Statistics

According to data (year 2015) from Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality, The most consumed drug by young Spaniards during 2015 was cannabis.

Of these, 34% have used drugs at some point, 27% in the last 12 months, and 16% in the last month. Of all these young people, aged between 14 and 18, 17% exhibit drug use that can be considered risky, meaning it is associated with significant psychiatric, physical, and social consequences.

At the European level, it is estimated that 14,5 million young people (11,7% of the total) consumed drugs in the last year. Sadly, Spain remains at the top of the list, surpassing France (22,1%), the Czech Republic (21,6%), and Denmark (17,6%).

These worrying figures are due to the false perception of absence of risk among Spanish youth.

Statistical data identifies cannabis, along with alcohol, as the substance that, when consumed in adolescence, is associated with a higher risk of consuming other substances at later ages.

Spain sadly remains in the lead, surpassing France (22,1%), the Czech Republic (21,6%) and Denmark (17,6%).

During 2014 (2015 figures are not yet available), 51,5% of the emergencies attended to for psychoactive substance use in hospitals in the Community of Madrid were due to cannabis.

Remember that:

  • Cannabis is derived from a shrub. There are two varieties: Sativa and Indica.
  • The main way to consume cannabis is by smoking.
  • Synthetic cannabinoids are sold on the internet in combination with products of dubious origin.
  • Cannabis is the most consumed drug by young Spaniards.
  • Cannabis is the gateway to other drugs.
